Bloodhounds with their amazing tracking skills have been employed by humans to pursue quarry. This breed of dogs is not aggressive and is dedicated to the task of pursuing trails for long distances.

They can enthusiastically follow trails for many miles and when pursuing a scent they keep in touch with a deep melodic baying call.

The size of an average bloodhound is 23 – 27 in (58 – 69 cm) and the weight is 80 – 110 lb (36 – 50 kg). The bitches are smaller than the male dog.

Exercise
As they have boundless energy they need to exercise at least once a day. It is best to take them for long walks. The stamina of this dog is amazing and a spacious environment can help it thrive.

At home
The dog may not be an ideal choice for homes that have toddlers or small kids as they are large built compared to other breeds.

Behavior
Obedience training is not easy as they do not respond easily when following a trail. They show great determination when pursuing a trail and are so dedicated to it that they may not choose to respond even when the owner calls out to them.

Grooming
The grooming requirements are pretty straightforward and all that needs to done is to brush weekly and check the folds of the skin for any infection. As these dogs are very active they may develop a strong doggy odor and a weekly bath can help get rid of it. Grooming is important to stay healthy and detect any early signs of infection.

Common Health Problems
The common health issues include bloating. Owners need to ensure that the dogs do not exercise after feeding as it can lead to bloating.
