What Are The Things You Need To Know About Bulimia Nervosa

Individuals with bulimia nervosa are concerned about their weight and indulge in a cycle of eating and then purging. It is a disorder related to eating food. It is similar to anorexia nervosa and people with these problems have low self esteem. It is characterized by indulging in feasting on food then feeling guilty about it and this leads to vomiting, taking laxative pills and excessive exercising.
The intention is to lose all the weight that they had presumed to have accumulated while eating and to lose weight they indulge in all these harmful activities. It can cause serious physical, emotional and psychological damage. Most individuals who suffer from this disorder indulge in binge eating a couple of times in a week or in certain extreme cases on a daily basis.
After indulging in binge eating they feel that they need to resort to drastic measures to get rid of all the fat or body weight they have gained. It can be categorized into two types,
  1. Purging and
  2. Non-purging
Bulimia nervosa statistics show that among the total number of patients who suffer from it an amazing ninety percent happen to be women. What are signs of bulimia nervosa and how does an individual know that he or she is afflicted with it?
In order to know whether you suffer from this disorder, you need to ask yourself certain questions and the answers to these will help you determine your next course of action. The most important question that you need to ask yourself include
  • Whether you are obsessed with your body weight?
  • Do you feel guilty after having food?
  • Does food and dieting dominate your life?
  • Do you take laxatives and diet pills to control your weight?
If the answer is yes to most of these questions then you are suffering from this disorder and you need to get treated for it. As the individual gets caught in the cycle of eating and purging it could lead to dangerous consequences resulting in death.
Medical complications may also arise due to bulimia nervosa and these include
  • Missing or irregular menstrual cycles,
  • Constipation due to laxative abuse,
  • Ulcers,
  • Weight gain,
  • Swelling of the hands and feet,
  • Pain in the abdomen,
  • Tooth decay and
  • Mouth sores and sore throat
Treatment of bulimia nervosa can be done through medication and psychotherapy. It is very important that the cycle of eating and purging is broken by incorporating good eating habits in your daily routine. It will be a slow process at first with a couple of failures as breaking the habit will not be easy but with perseverance success over bulimia nervosa can be achieved.
